Youth Camp Counselors

Serving as a 4-H camp counselor helps youth grow as leaders while creating a fun, safe, and welcoming experience for younger campers. Counselors develop teamwork, communication, and problem-solving skills while building friendships and making lasting memories.

Youth staff positions are available based on grade level (as of October 2026):

Day Camp Counselors

Open to youth grades 8–9
Day camp counselors support younger campers (youth in grades K-3) throughout the day, help lead activities, encourage participation, and work with staff to create a positive camp environment.

Base Camp Counselors

Open to youth in grades 10 and above
Base camp counselors provide consistent support to a small group of campers (youth grades 3-8), including supervision in cabins and throughout scheduled activities. Counselors also help lead programs and camp traditions while working cooperatively with youth and adult staff.

All counselors may:

  • Contribute ideas and leadership to camp planning, including the theme, evening programs, and campfire.
  • Support campers’ safety, participation, and sense of belonging.
  • Encourage positive camper behavior and help resolve challenges.
  • Work as part of a team with other youth and adult staff.
  • Serve as positive role models for younger campers.

Adult Camp Committee

Adult volunteers play an essential role in planning, supporting, and delivering a successful camp experience. The committee meets monthly to develop camp plans, coordinate details, and prepare youth and adult staff for their responsibilities.

Adult camp committee members:

  • Help plan and develop camp programs, activities, and schedules.
  • Attend required trainings and preparation meetings.
  • Support youth counselors through guidance, encouragement, and supervision.
  • Work alongside youth and adult staff for the full length of camp.
  • Serve as positive role models who help create a safe, inclusive, and welcoming environment.

Adult committee members must be certified 4-H volunteers and complete all required training before serving at camp.

Other Volunteer Opportunities

Camp relies on dedicated volunteers who bring their skills and energy to create a safe, fun, and memorable experience. Explore the opportunities below to learn more about each role.

Camp Lifeguard

Lifeguards help keep campers safe during swimming activities by supervising the water and ensuring everyone follows pool or waterfront rules. A certified lifeguard is required whenever youth participate in swimming-related 4-H activities.

Requirements and supervision guidelines:

  • Lifeguards must be at least 16 years old and hold current Lifeguard Training, First Aid, and CPR/AED certifications.
  • Beach lifeguards must also have American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor certification, or an equivalent credential.
  • One certified lifeguard is required for every 25 people in the water.
  • One adult supervisor, who does not need to be lifeguard certified, is required for every 10 youth.

Camp Health Coordinator

The Health Coordinator supports camper health and safety throughout camp. This volunteer manages health records, medications, illness or injury concerns, first-aid needs, and communication with families and camp leadership when appropriate.

  • Complete required 4-H volunteer screening and training before serving.
  • Review camper health information and medication forms.
  • Safely store, document, and administer medications according to approved procedures.
